Few of these questions are actually about the near future of Danny Rand, K’un-Lun, as well as Madam Gao. And fewer still are about the subtle intricacies of the ability called the Iron Fist. Instead, the most pressing questions need to do with the series itself. Everything from plot to pacing to payoff makes its own unique brand of scrutiny at one point or another. But perhaps the most questionable element of this series is that, rather than build to a thematically appropriate orgasm, year 1 winds down to an inevitable confrontation involving Harold Meachum and Danny Rand. That is right; a show about a superhero kung fu master culminates in a rooftop battle between an undead businessman as well as the floppy-haired kid he believed died 15 years ago.
There's a narrative in Harold's continuing duplicity, and especially in the character he played in the death of Danny's parents. The dilemma is that Iron Fist only half-heartedly hunts for anything more than surface-level villainy from the character or his narrative. This decreases the elder Meachum into a mentally abusive businessman archetype that lords fatherly acceptance over three young guys so captivated by his parental authority they seem really shocked when he tries to kill them to further his own agenda or, you know, since among them favored vanilla ice cream over hibiscus gelato.

Wenham functions every scene like Harold does that punching bag in his key penthouse apartment. He does his very best to have fun in the role, and works hard to liven things up - take for instance the scene have been Harold uses a hammer to relieve two corpses of the teeth - but the script does not offer the celebrity much to work with. He's Jeff Bridges' Obadiah Stane crossed with Rutger Hauer's Richard Earle; but increasingly, it will become evident Harold's presence is little more than a tool to reconnect Danny with the Hand, although battling the dark group is the sole purpose of his function as the Iron Fist.
Like his character, Harold's association with all the racket is thin at best. And like Joy, Ward, and Rand Enterprises as a whole, Harold feels shoehorned to a richly drawn storyline that, like a lot of shared-universe goods, finally functions as table setting for an upcoming occasion rather than a vehicle for the immediate needs of this story. In the case of Iron Fist, the plot is much more concerned with illustrating how the Hand will likely act as the primary antagonist of Marvel and Netflix's forthcoming miniseries The Defenders. So, when Danny and Colleen's battle with the Hand is taken as far as it could go, before a resolution clearly intended for a higher-profile project introduces itself, Iron Fist puts the Hand on the back-burner and refocuses its focus on Harold.

Back in that mode, then, Harold is business as usual, and Danny, his younger, more inexperienced, and idealistic adversary, who should, in contrast, represent the sort of anarchic chaos a fading generation sees in the youths coming to steal their seat at the desk, is simply business as it needs to be. When he's interrupting the business ventures of a greedy capitalist in bed using a league of heroin-dealing ninjas, the very best Iron Fist can muster for Danny to perform is some earnest finger-wagging about doing the bare minimum, such as not polluting whole communities and then denying obligation. Much like the dull fight scenes, even the corporate battles from Danny Rand's world are tepid and uninspired. When he is falling ass backwards into doing the right thing, Danny somehow manages to do it with all the flair and intrigue of dry toast.

Time and again, the show feels like it's trying to convince the audience the way Danny's mastery of kung fu isn't nearly as interesting as watching a na誰f with zero formal business training create high-level decisions about the future of a presumably multi-national corporation. That would be OK if this were a show about unscrupulous businessmen and women doing dubious matters in support to the almighty dollar. Questions like: What's Iron Fist - a series about an orphaned kung fu master who beat a dragon up to receive magical punching abilities - not the wildest martial arts epic since Kill Bill? What's RZA, the one person who appears to understand the importance of kung fu in a kung fu series, not requested to create more creative decisions on this show? And why does the set position a collision involving an orphaned child and his estranged dad as the series' climax, if the only character arc which rewards is that of Ward Meachum - a secondary character who is also a drug-addled murderer?
The show is nice being next in a long line of stories about rich white guys returning from far-off areas, prepared to beat up bad guys and exact revenge on people who did their parents wrong. But there is nothing sacrosanct about the narrative of Iron Fist, so why put the audience through a different routine origin? The choice to focus on Harold and Rand Enterprises becomes even more interested once you stop to consider how far away both are from the genre Iron Fistapparently fits into. Here is the story of a young man who knows kung fu and is in possession of some nebulously defined magical powers that produce his martial arts abilities more exciting than everyone else. For any reason, season 1 of Iron Fist wishes to be about anything else.
